Digital Interaction”
Located in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, this project aims to modernize the historic National Puppet Theatre. Respecting the original architectural fabric, the design introduces a "Modular Factory" generation logic. Through staggered volumes, interlocking spaces, and a transparent glass envelope, the formerly enclosed theater is transformed into a porous, open urban art installation, creating a profound dialogue between classical narrative and modern architectural language.
Through the architectural form of 'frozen curtains,' the design seeks to dissolve the threshold between the illusory performances within and the reality of daily life outside. This spatial metaphor ensures that the entire structure remains immersed in that singular, evocative moment of anticipation before the show begins. Moving beyond the concept of an isolated venue, the theater is reimagined as a dynamic cultural hub—a vessel that preserves collective urban memories, ignites community vitality, and embraces the transformative power of future technologies.
Curtain Morphology & Sensory Interaction
A core highlight is the architectural extraction of the "stage curtain." By abstracting fabric folds into rigid geometric arches, the design solidifies the fluid curtain into a permanent ceremonial form, evoking a sense of "never-ending" performance. Integrated with a dedicated digital interaction App, the audience can not only explore the physical play of light and shadow but also engage in online rituals and character interactions, experiencing puppetry art that transcends spatial and temporal boundaries.
Architectural Drawing
The most iconic arch element inside the theater is actually an architectural expression of the stage curtain form. By transforming the soft, flowing folds of the curtain into a rigid, timeless architectural geometry. These "frozen curtains" not only visually pay homage to the classic framed stage of puppet theater, but also capture the sense of ritual in the moment before the play begins.
